Representations on the Cumbria coal mine

Together with fellow academics, including experts in climate strategy, carbon footprinting, steel industry decarbonisation and resource economics, I have worked to provide evidence on the Cumbria coal mine, both to the local planning committee of Cumbria County Council, to the national government, and to the Public Inquiry to be held in September 2021.

Below is a link to all these submissions.

Joint statement by academic experts on the future need for coal in the steel industry  (June 2020)

Joint letter by academic experts regarding the proposed 2049 end-date for the Cumbria mine (September 2020)

Joint letter by academic experts to the Prime Minister requesting a Public Inquiry on the mine (February 2021)

In January 2020, myself and Mike Berners-Lee authored a more comprehensive report, The case against new coal mines in the UK, published by Green Alliance in January 2020. As part of their submission to Cumbria County Council in May 2020, West Cumbria Mining released a response to this report, which contained numerous inaccuracies and misrepresentations, as we set out in this detailed rebuttal.

This is our joint submission to the Public Inquiry (May 2021).
